Week 11: Darlene Deibler Rose
Character Traits: Perseverance, Evangelism, Faith/Faithfulness, Love, Obedience, Prayerfulness
One year after Darlene accepted Christ into her life, she felt the Lord’s strong call to missions as she listened to a missionary speak at a church in Boone, Iowa. Several years after hearing this inspiring testimony, she heard another missionary speaker by the name of Russel Deibler who would change the course of her life forever. After hearing him speak, the two were introduced and quickly became life-long friends. They were happily wed August 18th, 1937, and went to Papua New Guinea as missionaries. Life was beautiful and full for Darlene as she shared the great love of her Savior with those she loved most.
Life soon began to unravel as her team heard on the radio about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As inhabitants on an island in the Pacific, Darlene and her team soon became captives of the Japanese Imperial army. Russell along with most other men in their compound were separated from the women and loaded into trucks for transport to a prison camp. As the truck pulled away, Russell’s parting words to his wife quoted Hebrews 13:5,
“Remember one thing, dear: God said that He would never leave us nor forsake us.”
Little did Darlene know that those would be the last words she would ever hear from her husband. Darlene was soon taken by the Japanese to the Benteng Tinggi Internment camp, the first of various POW camps she would experience over the next four years. Most of the people who went there did not survive. During this time, the Lord opened many doors for Darlene to evangelize to those around her, including Yamaji, the chief supervisor of the Kampili POW Camp.
After surviving the war, Darlene remarried and spent most of her life doing what she loved best: frontier missions work with those not yet reached. She went into the Lord’s presence in 2004. Darlene’s testimony is a profound story of God’s constant provision and steadfast love. Our sovereign God will never forsake us or leave us!
"I was to discover, however, that when I took my eyes off the circumstances that were overwhelming me, over which I had no control, and looked up, my Lord was there…deep in my heart He whispered, “I’m here. Even when you don’t see me, I’m here. Never for a moment are you out of my sight.”
